Normally, prospective Research students should have obtained a Master's degree in Fine Art or Photography.
We are seeking researchers who consider the ways in which art practices may embody and generate critical discourse and who are also actively engaged with theory as a form of practice. The Photography research programme is particularly interested in the relation between image and language; and the still and the moving image. It seeks to develop innovative approaches to critical and theoretical writing as well as to critically informed studio practice.
Applications should include a portfolio of previous work and a written research proposal that convincingly describes and contextualises your research questions. It should also include a relevant and comprehensive bibliography.

Your portfolio must be well edited and include a selection of recently completed work, which should not exceed 20 prints of maximum 50 x 60cm.
- You should include a copy of your MA dissertation as well as relevant critical texts you have written.
- Your proposal must be specific and demonstrate the relevance of your research questions.
- Edited video or DVD should be a maximum of 5–7 minutes long. We do not accept CD-ROMs at this stage of the exam.
- No framed work or 3D work should be submitted as part of your portfolio.
