Our department seeks to pioneer new approaches for our mobile futures. We believe this philosophy is essential to engage with the broader issues of vehicle design if we are to optimise opportunities for mobility. We are therefore concerned with accessibility, aerodynamics, environmental impact, ergonomics, legislation, materials, production, safety and technology, as well as with the aesthetic principles of vehicle design. We provide an environment where students can pursue, debate and prioritise these issues as individual designers through projects and studies following three pathways: Urban Flow, Inside Out and Automark.
Vehicle Design at the RCA aims to harness, encourage and extend students’ skills and processes. It seeks innovation with practicality, marrying experience and practice to creative thinking, blending teaching and learning seamlessly in a climate of informed opinion, buttressed by in-depth research, multiple student interface, teamwork and academic excellence. We offer unexpected challenges and unusual viewpoints, sparking creativity and supplying critical analysis. Above all, we empower individual expression, seek innovative solutions and demand aesthetic excellence through design for a better world.
