This PhD project examines the socio-cultural, economic and technical agencies upon the materiality and making of Malaysian songket textiles. By using my own weaving practice, I both include and abstract from these agenices, producing textiles of alternative material, technical and aesthetic genre. In transferring my practice to Malaysian weaving infrastructures, I use development and social theory methodologies that advocate facilitation of choice rather than imposition upon local makers. This research project argues that by facilitating external creativity which abstracts from internal agencies, the socio-cultural, technical and economic boundaries within creativity can be extended to provide choice to local makers.
