All research students are required to pass an Interim Examination before passing into their next year of study. The purpose of the Interim is to assess progress, and this Examination may be seen as a point of consolidation following the student’s preceding year’s work. The criteria applied, broadly speaking, are that the stage of progress and standard of work presented are consistent with reasonable expectations relative to the amount of time expended. The role of the Examination Board is to determine whether or not the student should be permitted to move on to the next phase of study.

Most students are initially enrolled on the MPhil programme and must therefore sit a transfer examination if they wish to continue to PhD. This normally takes place at the end of the first or second year. Students are advised to discuss this process with their supervisors to ensure that they are ready to take the examination at the appropriate time.
Some students may have planned to transfer from MPhil to PhD at the
outset of their research degree, others may have found,
during the process of researching for their MPhil, that their work leads to a PhD.
