Peter Childs is the Professorial Lead in Engineering Design at Imperial College London and Joint Course Director of the Industrial Design Engineering programme with the Royal College of Art. He was formerly the Director of InQbate, the Higher Education Funding Council for England-supported Centre of Excellence in Creativity and Director of the Rolls-Royce-supported University Technology Centre for Aero-Thermal Systems. His general interests include creativity tools, design, rotating flow, heat transfer and sustainability.
Peter Childs began his career as a locksmith. In 1984–7 he completed a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and then became a Research Officer and Research Fellow at the University of Sussex. From 1989 to 1995 he worked with Llama Linda Ltd in Peru. Childs has been a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader and Professor of Engineering Design from 1994 to 2008 at the University of Sussex. He was Director of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Aero-Thermal Systems (2005–8) and is currently Director of InQbate, the Centre of Excellence in Creativity (2008–). He is also Professorial Lead of Engineering Design (Imperial College London) and Joint Course Director in Innovation Design Engineering at the Royal College of Art.
