Dr Kailash Ramlaul
- Laboratory Manager & Specialist Technical Instructor in Biomaterials
-
Materials Science Research Centre
Kailash is a Specialist Technical Instructor in Biomaterials, as well as the Laboratory Manager for a new research-focused biomaterials lab situated in the Materials Science Research Centre. He is leading the development of this lab, which will enable a pathway from ideation to experimentation all within a versatile space for biomaterial science at the College.
Kailash is a researcher and science communicator with a background in biochemistry, molecular and structural biology. He holds a PhD from Imperial College London and a Master’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford. Since completing his PhD, Kailash has brought his expertise in molecular and cellular biochemistry to the RCA. He is responsible for the development and operation of a research lab at the Materials Science Research Centre which will lead new investigations into biomaterial invention, experience, characterisation and contextualisation.

Practice
Kailash’s research is discovery-based, utilising his laboratory experience and broad interest in the life sciences. He is an advocate for the STEM to STEAM education pathway, which encourages collaboration and translational impacts between research disciplines and the wider world.
Research interests
Inspired by his background in molecular and structural biology and interdisciplinary experiences with synthetic biology, Kailash's research interests lie in the molecular design(s) of, and created by, living systems. By taking a view of biological systems and material production at the molecular level, macroscopic design and microscopic genetic engineering concepts can be synthesised to inspire new bio-based material innovation.
