Research and Knowledge
The RCA welcomes the recommendations from The Independent Review of University Spin-Out Companies commissioned by the Government.
Since its foundation, the RCA has had a strong focus on industry engagement and is continuing to bring its art and design capabilities to creative innovation, humanising technology, and solving business, societal and environmental challenges.
The RCA knowledge and technology transfer ecosystem, including InnovationRCA, the RCA’s award-winning IP and entrepreneurship centre, has supported the formation and growth of over 80 start-up companies based on IP spun out of the RCA. The RCA has always promoted founder friendly policies and has been actively building a strong investment environment, including its first Design and Innovation S/EIS Investment Fund and an angel investor network.
The RCA Knowledge Exchange Strategy (HIEF Accountability Statement 2021-22 to 2024-25) reflects our strong commitment to transparency, and our engagement with a diverse range of stakeholders including our student community, researchers, external partners, industry, investors, and policy makers, aligning with the principles of the UK's Knowledge Exchange Concordat.
We continue to explore and develop new models for commercialisation of creative know-how and research outputs that are not protectable by patents. We recognise the need to invest in a supportive research culture and environment, empowering our staff to share the positive impact of their research as widely as possible. In 2023, we launched the RCA Research and Knowledge Exchange Academy to provide training for our academic and research community to equip them with skills on entrepreneurship, IP, and business engagement.
The Spin-Out Review provides a rich context for further review and development of our existing policies, processes, and practices, supporting the UK’s ambition to be a science and innovation superpower, and we are happy to confirm our commitment to adopting its recommendations.
