Research Interests
Ekua’s visual and research practise explores the politics of race, memory, narratives and belonging against the backdrop of British colonialism. She examines these concepts by interrogating personal narratives, as well as delving into her family’s historic and cultural background as a source of investigation.
Practice
Ekua is particularly interested in how the mechanics of photography can be used to reaffirm and or recreate forms of identity. Focusing on family narratives, memories, and photographs, her practice examines some of the larger themes surrounding Black British cultural identity and its relationship with Britain’s colonial past to the present day.
Focusing on the power of the photograph and how it may be used to reaffirm and/or recreate ideas surrounding African and African Caribbean identity, Ekua’s practice and research analyses questions exploring authenticity, hyper-visibility and invisibility.
