Dr Katharina Vones is Senior Tutor in Jewellery and Metal at the Royal College of Art.
Trained at the University of St.Andrews (2001), the Edinburgh College of Art (2006), the Royal College of Art (2010) and the University of Dundee (2017), her current research focuses on sustainable craft practice and how this can be incorporated into digital materiality through process experimentation. Her jewellery practice explores how digital jewellery that possesses biomimetic characteristics can be brought to life through the use of reactive and living materials. She is also interested in the way in which the arrival of digital making methodologies has influenced artisanal maker cultures in the global South and created hybrid communities of making.
Katharina has exhibited her work widely both nationally and internationally at galleries, trade fairs and conferences and has won numerous awards for her practice, including being shortlisted for a prestigious Arts Foundation Fellowship in 2015. She actively blogs about her practice as a way to encourage craft practitioners to participate in open and sustainable communities of making at www.smart-jewellery.com.
