Xiyao Chen

Xiyao is an architect, researcher and artist based in London. Their research and practice focus on climate embodiment through decolonial and participatory action research.
Xiyao studied architecture at the Architectural Association and had professional experience in designing new museum spaces for the V&A East, Sadler’s Wells Theatre and Museum of London.

Research interests
Xiyao's current research interests focus on care over extraction, challenging eco-social injustices by focusing on more-than-human interspecies kinship and the affective turn in ecology.
Practice
Xiyao is nurturing a practice akin to permaculture, through collective, socially engaged and interdisciplinary works, across the expanded field of queer ecology, moving images, sonic storytelling and place-based installations. Their practice has been supported by Arts Council England and the British Council.
Their works have been shown at Macau International Art Biennale, Bie Biennale in Sweden, the Old Peckham Waiting Room in London, SODAS2123 in Vilnius, Centre for Contemporary Art in Glasgow, Zaratan Arte Contemporânea in Lisbon, Matadero in Madrid and PB27 Gallery in Porto among others.
