Turbulence: Metal, Flows in Thinking and Things

Turbulence: Metal, Flows in Thinking and Things seeks to find new dialogues and approaches to understanding the functions and potential of metals in art and design. Metals create our contemporary world, often just out of view (screen). Metal art and design is highly pluralistic and multi-facetted; the boundaries of which are to be tested and expanded. With an increasing interest in materiality and sensory engagement, running alongside, and also, interlinking with the immersive immateriality of virtual reality and artificial intelligence, this symposium explores the future meaning of metal as foundation for art and design practices.

The symposium draws on an international list of speakers, from artists and academics to philosophers and anthropologists., from poets to material scientists, we ask, what does it mean to ‘make’ in metal?
