Founded by Chunyan Cai and Tao Liu in 2016, atelier tao+c is an emerging architectural design studio based in Shanghai.
Their works span from designing the interior of small urban apartments to the renovation of old rural houses, from objects such as a pendant lamp to a housing block, in parallel with their continuous research on the restoration of old buildings and objects in the domestic context.
Regardless of their wide range of scales and programs, they tackle each project with careful investigations and research, tapping into a better understanding of typology. Their design method is semi-architectural semi-interior, retreating to the inner world, allowing the space to grow from the inside and break through the perimeter, intermediating the inside and outside, new and old.
During the past five years, the studio has been recognized by receiving multiple design awards, including being shortlisted for the AR Emerging Architecture Awards 2020, Interior Project of the Year by Dezeen Awards and winners of Architizer A+ awards.
