Thompson’s contribution to art and design, being actively involved in design education over the past 20 years, and having led both New York’s and London’s design museums were factors in his selection by sponsor Samsung to be a torchbearer.
He said: ‘It really has been incredible to see so many amazing people who have been involved with the torch relay throughout its journey to the opening ceremony, people who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of their communities, and those who have overcome huge hurdles in life – amazing sportsmen and women. It is truly humbling to be included amongst their ranks.’
The Rector was one of six RCA torchbearers to have carried the Olympic flame through its final stages before it reaches the Olympic Stadium on Friday.
