Highlight student work includes:
In response to fish farming companies world wide, Sven Wrinkler (MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering) has created ‘Ziwa Vision’; a robotics system that uses quantitative AI analysis and assistive automation to feed fish more sustainably and significantly improve environmental damage, fish health and financial loss.
Mia Upton (MA Textiles) presents B.S. (Boat Series), a series of textiles incorporating weaving and hand embroidery to create bold visuals inspired by her Scottish heritage and memories growing up in Hong Kong.
Gyeom Kim (MA Design Products) responds to the historic use of plastic coverings in industrial design for aesthetic purposes by showcasing the inherent beauty of materials and mechanisms.
Jun Zhuang, Ma Sha, Ziyi Yuan, Yitong Wang and Xianzhuyue Li (MDes Design Futures) explore alternative food options that better align with dietary cultures and nutritional requirements.
Starsen Koo Moon (MA Fashion) presents a series of wearable sculptures that transform garments into kinetic entities, capturing moments of fleeting movement and innovating traditional material use.
Dewi Rachmandari, Ling Wu and Trisha Fernandes (MA Service Design) have investigated the unique needs of young adult family caregivers engaged in full time education. Through design interventions and a service, they provide caregivers with the necessary information to reduce social isolation and balance their responsibilities.
Caini Liu (MA/ MSc Global Innovation Design) presents Scribe Expert, a clip that attaches to specialist paper and digitises text. Using AI, Scribe Expert learns from the user’s unique marks to understand writing habits before transforming them into a polished, readable and easily archivable format.
Liam Boylan and Sonny Kong (MA Intelligent Mobility) rethink the role of public transport in a car-free London of 2050. They explore the potential of AI to develop a luxury experience that minimises user input and is unobtrusive in pedestrian and green spaces.
Further events to be announced, but will include:
Interrogating the Unseen: a series of panel talks, workshops and keynote lectures, from emerging and renowned textiles makers and designers, exploring four tenets of RCA2024: Visual Expressions, Emergent Futures, Crafting Identities and Symbiotic Intimacies.
