The Royal College of Art Announces Graduate Diploma in Art & Design

The Graduate Diploma offers 120 credits at FHEQ Level 6 and is a 30-week programme of full-time study. The programme will give students a solid grounding in the learning methods required for postgraduate study and will teach them to develop proficiency in discursive languages, independent learning methods and practices of art and design.

Students will be invited to immerse themselves in College life and be part of a concentrated community of outstanding artists, designers and communicators. Each student will have full access to the College’s excellent facilities, technical equipment and lectures and will be supported in the development of a final portfolio that can be used for application to further postgraduate study or direct employment.

Part of the study programme will equip students towards a full understanding about future possible study options or career paths available to them. Each student will be encouraged to push themselves creatively and will be invited to select a broad specialism at enrolment from Fine Art, Humanities, Fashion & Textiles, and Product, Interiors & Spatial Design.

The course is divided into two parts, the first offering a broad-based introduction to art and design and the various study options available in the field, together with an introduction to the kinds of learning methods that students are likely to encounter in the study of art and design. The second part of the course will enable students to focus in more depth on their chosen area of study and work towards the preparation of a body of work and portfolio.

Applications to the Graduate Diploma in Art & Design are welcomed from across the world. The programme is aimed at candidates from a range of backgrounds, including those who have the required educational background to go on to Master’s study in art and design, but require greater proficiency in the English language. It will also be of benefit to those who do not have an undergraduate background in art and design, but can demonstrate potential in their chosen discipline of study. The programme can also be used as a diagnostic experience to help students decide which area to specialise in at Master’s level.

Places on the course will be allocated entirely on merit based on an Entrance Examination. The first part of the Entrance Examination consists of an assessment of the application and portfolio of work. If successful at assessment stage, students will be invited to the second part of the Entrance Examination, a formal interview with the appropriate admissions board, and – for some specialisms – practical tests.
