Materials Science Research Centre Biomaterials Lab
The Biomaterials Lab (Bio Lab) is a new and dedicated space for interdisciplinary collaboration between designers and scientists for biomaterials research. Housed in the Rausing Research & Innovation Building in Battersea, the Bio Lab will enable in-house exploration of biomaterials within the context of regenerative circular systems.
The Lab is equipped for interaction and experimentation with microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, as well as other organisms like plants, or materials derived from them. These organisms will be grown under controlled conditions using incubators, and strains and materials can be stored over long periods of time using low-temperature freezers.
The Lab houses a microbiological safety cabinet and autoclaves to ensure safe handling of microorganisms, as well as sterilisation of materials and waste. A variety of chemical processes will also be explored using a fume cupboard with storage for a variety of chemicals and reagents.
Other equipment includes: precise balances, a pH calibration probe, centrifuges, a sonicator (membrane disruptor), a peristaltic pump for semi-automated liquid handling, and a 3D printer for exploring additive manufacturing using biomaterials.
Importantly, the Bio Lab will allow for new transdisciplinary approaches to biomaterials research through the integration of materials science and biotechnology with design. This is a key ingredient for innovation and the realisation of biomaterial concepts for a regenerative and sustainable future.
