Kinesis: The future of design methodology

In design, the tools we use directly influence the forms we create. So what will our tools of the future be and what sort of forms will they help us create?

Kinesis is a concept design tool serving as a future application for a ground breaking liquid metal created by researchers at North Carolina State University. The ability to shift shape with the application of an electric current offers automotive designers a material that could be used in a flexible and sculptural process, thus faithfully reflecting motion with a cascade of connected forms.

My experiments with liquid metal served to influence the design language of the vehicle, and by sculpting from a single volume as a starting point, my aim was to change the way we think about an exterior as simply a shell. The result was the creation of interconnected surfacing that can house the increasingly streamlined and integrated components of a modern electric drive-train.

The final result is portrayed as an automotive sculpture to stay true to the project and process, and the material driven design results in pure, organic and unified forms.

  • Twelve years of experience in medicine and practicing as an eye surgeon has afforded me many privileges and inimitable opportunities to change the lives of those I have treated. However, as a creative individual full of ideas and yearning to innovate, it is the lives of the wider population that I wish to influence. After years of restoring other people’s vision, the time has come to realise my own.

A polymath with knowledge in anatomy, psychology, medicine and optics, passions ranging from journalism to photography and skills encompassing surgery to calligraphy, I consider myself to be a truly diverse individual. And it is this diverse background of education and occupation that I feel offers a unique insight and a fresh perspective into automotive design.

As a designer I am drawn to entities that exhibit balance and harmony, from geometry and mathematics to astronomy and creations in nature. It is this order that inspires my aesthetic, however fusing concepts and ideas I've experienced within my various fields of involvement is what stimulates the functionality and idea generation behind my work.

Change is inevitable as the world progresses and it is designers who have the privilege of directing that change. The future is about mobility; the next generation of vehicles will define the way we move with novel ways of doing it. In an industry where models are remembered for decades and celebrated throughout generations, the challenge to improve upon a comfortable idea of perfection is what makes automotive design such a stimulating challenge.

In a field that is widening to incorporate a broader remit, we need not only the most skilled designers but also the brightest of minds to take it forward.
